Happy Mothers Day!

With Mother's Day coming up this weekend we would like to pay tribute to all the mothers out there with this great story of a loving and dedicated mother who just introduced 13 new "children" to this world. This morning as the last duckling (13 of 13) was preparing for a “Leap of Faith” into the big blue waters of Dale Hollow Lake. The mother had sat faithfully on the eggs for nearly 30 days in a flower pot on the deck of the Marina. The marina crew and visitors had been anticipating the arrival of the cute baby ducks for weeks. On the morning of Saturday May 3rd, the eggs began cracking open and the chirping began. In less than 24 hours, the mother began nudging them out of the flower pot one by one. The flower pot is 24” tall so the baby’s first leap was scary enough. Then she urged them over to the edge of the dock some 16 feet away for the leap from the dock to the water. This leap is more challenging as it is over 36” from the deck to the water and many unknown predators, (bass, turtles, otters, etc.) are swimming beneath the cool clear waters of Dale Hollow Lake. This brave little duck finally made the leap not into a safe harbor but into a dangerous world filled with predators. Reminds me that Faith in our mothers and especially in God will stand against all of the predators of this world. (Philippians 4:13).

Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers!

Boating Season Is Here
April is here and traditionally that means “Boating Season”. Judging by the large number of you who are venturing out onto the docks and opening your boats, I do believe boating season is here. It is so good to see many of you coming by the Marina Office and Ship’s Store. It has been a long winter and we truly enjoy visiting with those of you who have already been by to say hello and pick up your dockage and parking permits. If you have not yet stopped by the marina, please do so at your earliest convenience – we look forward to seeing you.

New Cottage Nearing Completion.
As you can see from the attached photograph, the new cottage tentatively known as “Sassafras Hollow” is nearing completion. Actually, completion is not yet in sight but we hope the interior comes along faster than the exterior. We are hoping for a mid-June completion date if all goes well. The dry-stack field stone fireplace and all glass lakeview frontage of this cottage make for a very unique experience. This new unit is available for a seasonal rental basis should you know someone who desires to have a lakefront accommodation for the entire boating season (April through October), for their family, company, or organization to enjoy, please spread the word.

Spring Is Almost Here.

Despite this recent snowfall, Spring is in the air on Dale Hollow Lake. Sand Hill Cranes have been flying North and the frogs have started croaking at night. This is a good sign warm weather is not far away. We have experienced a few warm days so far but ole man winter keeps reminding us that spring is not officially here. March 20th is actually the first official day of spring this year and we are beginning to see some customers venture out onto the docks to get an early start on cleaning their boat. We look forward to seeing you very soon and we hope you will visit us early this spring and get a jump start on the boating season.

Sunset Marina Assistant Manager Francis Copeland has been hard at work on a near “Life Size” map of Dale Hollow Lake. As you can see from the photo, the map is nearing completion and it may not be life size but it is at least larger than Francis. The map is eight feet tall and 12 feet wide and is very detailed as Francis spent countless hours making sure the map is on scale. Please visit the breezeway on the main dock to check out the large map and be sure to let Francis know what a wonderful job he has done on this project. He is very talented.

For those of you who dock your boat here on a year-round basis, please note that April 1st is the due date for 2008 Dockage Fees. We will be sending out invoices very soon. We want to thank all of you who are returning for the 2008 season and remind you to pick up your Dale Hollow Lake Satellite Poster on your first visit to the marina. Also, a reminder to boat owners whose boat is equipped with an onboard toilet (head). Dale Hollow Lake has been designated as a “No-Discharge” Reservoir which does not permit any sewage (treated or untreated) to be discharged overboard and into the waters of Dale Hollow Lake. An addendum to your dockage contract will be included with your invoice and Sunset Marina is required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that all boats moored in Sunset’s Harbor is equipped with an onboard holding tank. This document will be required before Sunset Marina can renew your 2008 Dockage Agreement.

Please visit “The Captain’s Post” often for periodic updates, news, events, and comments from the Helm of Sunset Marina.

Thank You & Happy Boating!

Tom Allen

Air-Evac Membership for Sunset’s Customers

Sunset Marina has negotiated an agreement with Air-Evac that provides membership for all Sunset Customers and Employees that require a medically necessary “air evacuation” from Sunset Marina’s premises. Air-Evac has a helicopter based in Albany, Kentucky which is less than 10 nautical miles from the marina. Sunset Marina is proud to support Air-Evac through a corporate membership and at the same time, provide our employees and customers with the peace of mind knowing that if they require an immediate air evacuation from Sunset Marina, the expense of this flight is covered through Sunset’s Membership. We hope you appreciate this gesture and the peace of mind that it provides should you or your families require the use of this service. Almost every year, someone is injured on Dale Hollow Lake or has a medical emergency that necessitates and justifies the need to be evacuated to an appropriate medical center. Should this occur for one of our customers or employees, Sunset Marina has secured the appropriate coverage.

Dale Hollow Lake Level Forecast for 2008

As all of you know, Dale Hollow Lake’s water elevation was drastically effected by the ongoing repairs to Wolf Creek Dam on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and by the unusually dry conditions in 2007. Dale Hollow experienced unusually high elevations in the spring due to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers holding water back in Dale Hollow to make up for the lost water capacity in Lake Cumberland which was held at elevation 680 feet above sea level or 40 feet below the normal pool level. Since Lake Cumberland could not store as much water as normal, the Army Corps utilized Dale Hollow’s storage capacity by saving as much water as possible in the spring of 2007. However, during mid-summer 2007 when the U.S. Army Corps realized that the drought conditions was negatively impacting all of their reservoirs and navigation on the Cumberland River System was being impacted, they had no other alternative but to utilize the water stored in Dale Hollow Lake in order to keep the commercial barge traffic moving on the Cumberland River and keep enough water in the river for the steam plants to produce electricity. Normally, Lake Cumberland supplies the majority of the water for the Cumberland River System. However, with Lake Cumberland being held down to elevation of 680, the Army Corps could not draw down Lake Cumberland any lower. Center Hill Lake is also experiencing seepage problems and was being held lower than normal and unable to supply water downstream. Therefore, Dale Hollow became the most important reservoir in their system and was supplying all of the necessary water downstream. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers informed Dale Hollow Lake Marina Operators that the forecast for 2008 would be similar to what we experienced in 2007. We can expect higher than normal water levels in the spring, provided we receive ample rainfall and if Dale Hollow’s water supply becomes critical for downstream navigation and electricity, we can expect lower than normal elevation in the fall of 2008. All of the reservoirs in the Cumberland River System are important to navigation, power production, and flood control. Recreational boating is unfortunately but understandably on the bottom of the priority list for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Sunset Marina will adapt to the water level conditions in order to make sure you can enjoy your 2008 boating season. For more information regarding lake levels visit www.lakecumberland.com Happy Boating!

Thank you Lord!

Thank You Lord! Today I am thankful for many things but a couple of recent happenings cause me to be especially thankful. The recent (Tuesday Night) storm system that moved across the country was forecast to be an extremely powerful storm causing extensive damage with 60 to 70 mile per hour winds. After an afternoon of preparing for the violent storm, worry mode set in. After some useless worry, I convinced myself that I was accomplishing nothing and I preoccupied myself with some home projects. However, once the leading edge of the storm hit my home, I was convinced that damage and destruction was eminent at the marina. The noise of the wind and tree limbs hitting my home was the worst we had experienced since moving in three years ago. Worry hit again and I proceeded to the marina to see the damage. I parked on the Highway 111 bridge and looked west over the main dock and restaurant. No visible damage. I then did a u-turn and parked on the opposite side of the bridge looking east. No visible damage. “Thank You Lord!” The inspection during daylight the next morning confirmed that we had no apparent damage to docks, cabins or customer’s boats. Only a few ropes broke on customer’s boats and some canopies and lawn furniture blown into the lake. I am so thankful. And then today, an American Bald Eagle soars over the marina and lands in a tree across from the dock. I ask Brad Richardson to grab a work boat and take me across the lake where I captured some good photographs. You can view the photo album by clicking on the “Related Links” link below. Every time I see one of these magnificent creatures, I realize how lucky we are to live in America and how thankful we should be for the democracy we live in. I love wildlife but the Eagle holds a very special place in my heart and I am thankful to live and work on Dale Hollow Lake. It takes one of these “grateful” moments, seeing this majestic bird, to provide temporary relief from the day’s problems and stresses. Thank You Lord! I hope you enjoy the photos.
