It was the bittersweet occasion for the lunch that made this a special event. Brian Mueller, manager of Sunset Restaurant for the past eight years has resigned and this lunch was to honor Brian not just with a meal but with a fairwell and a special momento to remember Sunset's Crew. Brian was presented with a Ship's Wheel that was once at the helm of one of Sunset's Rental Houseboats. The Ship's Wheel was engraved with a bronze disc that gave much deserved appreciation for Brian's service to Sunset Marina and Restaurant.
Brian and his wife Christi along with their daughter Hannah and son Daniel will be joining The Mustard Seed Ranch in Cookeville, Tennessee as full time missionaries. Brian and family will be house parents in one of two homes to benefit orphaned boys and girls. They will be the primary care givers for up to 8 girls in addition to their own two children. The Mustard Seed Ranch is a wonderful mission and if you are interested in learning more about Brian's new journey, please visit the Mustard Seed Ranch web-site.
We hope everyone will join us in wishing Brian and his family well with their new journey. Pictured in the photo left to right is Chef Zoom, Brian Mueller, and Sunset General Manager Tom Allen. Brian will be dearly missed
and will leave very big shoes to fill, no pun intended.

( 3 / 320 )The Michigan Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS) visited Sunset Marina Restaurant and toured Dale Hollow Lake on Sunday October 19, 2008. By clicking on the photo below you can view all of the Classic Boats in a slide show (click on view slideshow

One of the members of ACBS has recently retired to Crossville, Tennessee at Fairfield Glade Resort and he invited his fellow Michigan boaters to bring their antique watercraft to Dale Hollow Lake as part of a tour of three of Tennessee's Lakes. After visiting Center Hill Lake on Friday, and Watts Bar Lake on Saturday, these classic boat owners saved Tennessee's most beautiful lakes (Dale Hollow) for the final leg of their tour on Sunday. The boaters launched at Sunset Marina's East Launch Ramp and proceeded for a few miles upstream then proceeding back downstream stopping at Sunset Restaurant for lunch prepared by Chef Zoom. After lunch, they fired up their unique watercraft and toured the pristine Dale Hollow waters crossing into Kentucky and returning in the late afternoon to load their boats and thus ending their Tennessee Travels. The owner of the large (26 footer) green Chris Craft is actually the grandson of the founder of Chris Craft Boat Company.
We are glad these Michigan Boaters brought their Antique Boats to Sunset Marina and we welcome them back next year. I only hope that we will receive advance notice so we can inform all of our patrons who might want a close up view of these pieces of boating history. Thank You ACBS.

( 3 / 304 )Recently, the crew on “P-Dock” gathered at Ron & Brenda Shivley’s House for an end of season cook out. They gathered for a group photo before enjoying all the good cooking. I know it is before the meal because some of those men look way too thin don’t you think? I believe I see some infiltrators from “Q – Dock” as well. A good time was had by all and they were treated with excellent weather for a cookout and a wonderful “sunset” to end the day. Photos were submitted by Rudolph Tobbe. (babyboomer).

( 3 / 280 )I am very sorry for not keeping my promise to post a new blog every two weeks during this year. My last entry was May 2008 and most of you have probably stopped checking for a new blog. The question I have been asked all summer is, “Where are the Blogs?” Now that the summer boating season is behind us, I am beginning to find time to do some of the things that I enjoy doing and I really enjoy producing the blogs to keep our customers informed. That being said, I plan on getting back on track with regular blogs and if you have an idea that needs to be distributed to all the boaters out in the blogosphere, please send me your thoughts and I will give it a mention here for everyone to access.
Cruiser Owners – Be Cautious with wakes!
With Labor Day weekend behind us, the “No Wake” Zone along the North Shore has been lifted and this is now an open zone for high speed traffic. Something we notice every year when this zone is lifted, is the increased wakes and some minor damage from large cruiser wakes. Even though Sunset Marina’s Harbor is somewhat protected by the protective floating wavebreak, this device does not eliminate large cruiser wakes from penetrating the harbor and causing damage and injury. Therefore, we remind cruiser owners to travel through this zone in one of two fashions: a) Idle Speed; this is probably the least desirable for cruiser owners but it will insure that there is no damage or injury to other people or property. b) Full-Speed; If cruisers are fully on plane, they create less wake and the less likelihood that damage or injury will occur. The most damaging wakes come when cruisers are travelling at partial throttle or when going on plane or coming off plane. Please be conscious of your wake because you are responsible for any damage or injury caused by your boat’s wake.
2009 Activities and Events
Sunset Marina is looking forward to the next boating season and we would like to have several events specifically for our boat slip customers in 2009. When planning special events, we run into difficulty planning the event due to the majority of our employees are always needed to work the marina and serve the customers. We are searching for event coordinators or chairpersons who would like to work in cooperation with Sunset Marina in planning some fun and charitable events for 2009. Some of the events that we have seen conducted successfully from marinas include but are not limited to the following: PWC Poker Run; Houseboat Races; Houseboat Theme Parade; Children’s Fishing Rodeo; Lakeshore Clean-up; Lakeshore Scavenger Hunt; Customer Appreciation BBQ; If you have other ideas, please share them with us and if you or someone you know is interested in working with Sunset Marina to coordinate one or more of these events, please let us know. Sunset Marina desires to promote fun, successful, and charitable events for the joy and benefit of all our boat slip customers.
See you next Blog! Thank you for visiting and thank you for your business.

( 3 / 316 )The following article was sent to me several months ago by Sunset’s Slip Customer Rudolph Tobbe. The article is reprinted in it’s entirety from a blog entitled “Brenton’s Blog”. In addition to this “home remedy” to alleviate the nuisance of spiders, Sunset Marina has contracted with Orkin Pest Control to visit Sunset’s slips three times during the boating season to remove spider webs and spray a non-toxic solution on and around the covered slips. We hope this new service is beneficial to Sunset’s Slip Customers and we appreciate any feedback from you have concerning the effectiveness of these new treatments (both mothballs and Orkin). Below is the article from “Brenton’s Blog”.
“No More Spiders”
So, it’s official. If you want to get/keep spiders off your boat, use mothballs.
All you do is take a tupperware container, fill it with the entire box of mothballs; that you can purchase at your local grocery store. When you’re not on the boat, simply leave it open. When you get back on, close it up and stow it away.
I haven’t noticed much more then one or two spiders in the boat. And I only see them in the boat after I have closed up the container and aired the boat out. As for the spiders on the surface. I’ve seen a huge difference in the amount of webs and spiders on the shrouds and lifelines. I think since they have no place to hide in the boat during the day, they have either died, gotten eaten, or moved on.
It’s a simple and cheap solution. The smell quickly goes away when you open the boat up. For some reason I don’t mind the smell because it reminds me of my Babci’s (grandma’s) closet. It’s best not to inhale too much of that shite though. After all, it is designed to kill things.
