Dale Hollow Lake Level Forecast for 2008

As all of you know, Dale Hollow Lake’s water elevation was drastically effected by the ongoing repairs to Wolf Creek Dam on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and by the unusually dry conditions in 2007. Dale Hollow experienced unusually high elevations in the spring due to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers holding water back in Dale Hollow to make up for the lost water capacity in Lake Cumberland which was held at elevation 680 feet above sea level or 40 feet below the normal pool level. Since Lake Cumberland could not store as much water as normal, the Army Corps utilized Dale Hollow’s storage capacity by saving as much water as possible in the spring of 2007. However, during mid-summer 2007 when the U.S. Army Corps realized that the drought conditions was negatively impacting all of their reservoirs and navigation on the Cumberland River System was being impacted, they had no other alternative but to utilize the water stored in Dale Hollow Lake in order to keep the commercial barge traffic moving on the Cumberland River and keep enough water in the river for the steam plants to produce electricity. Normally, Lake Cumberland supplies the majority of the water for the Cumberland River System. However, with Lake Cumberland being held down to elevation of 680, the Army Corps could not draw down Lake Cumberland any lower. Center Hill Lake is also experiencing seepage problems and was being held lower than normal and unable to supply water downstream. Therefore, Dale Hollow became the most important reservoir in their system and was supplying all of the necessary water downstream. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers informed Dale Hollow Lake Marina Operators that the forecast for 2008 would be similar to what we experienced in 2007. We can expect higher than normal water levels in the spring, provided we receive ample rainfall and if Dale Hollow’s water supply becomes critical for downstream navigation and electricity, we can expect lower than normal elevation in the fall of 2008. All of the reservoirs in the Cumberland River System are important to navigation, power production, and flood control. Recreational boating is unfortunately but understandably on the bottom of the priority list for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Sunset Marina will adapt to the water level conditions in order to make sure you can enjoy your 2008 boating season. For more information regarding lake levels visit
